Lake Tangra Yumco, Tibet31.2N 86.4E
The tundra-like terrain of Tibet is punctuated by over 1500 lakes in the country’s “lake region”. The lakes are mainly salt or alkaline; mineral deposits quickly accumulate in their waters as most of them do not have outlets.
The large lake above the center is Tangra Yumco, the holy lake of the Bon believers. The lake lies at the bottom of a deeply sunken basin, surrounded by mountains on three sides. On the eastern bank of the lake stand red cliffs and the seven peaks of the Daerguo Mountains.
