Lake Paiku on the Tibetan Plateau, China28.9N 85.5E
Lake Paiku (top center) is located on the Tibetan Plateau, “The Roof of the World”, at 4,591 meters (15,070 ft). The lake is 27 km (17 miles) long and 6 km (4 miles) wide at its narrowest point. Here, part of its southeastern section is covered in ice.
Surrounded by rugged mountains on three sides that reach altitudes in excess of 5,725 meters (19,000 ft). Streams fed by glaciers cascade to the valley floor south of Lake Paiku, but only a few streams actually reach the lake.
Moving southward into the mountains of the Himalayas, the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, appears as a greyish area in the Kathmandu Valley. The snow peaks of the Mahabharat Lekh range of the Himalayas rise in the north providing the scenic backdrop to the city.
