Chad - March 30th, 2011

The green, butterfly-shaped body of water in the upper left quadrant is Lake Chad, a historically large, shallow lake in Africa.

The lake is economically important, providing water to more than 20 million people living in the four countries that surround it (Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria). The lake is situated on the edge of the Sahara Desert, as can be observed in this image from the tan terrain surrounding it.
