Multiple artificial reservoirs created by dams along the Euphrates River can be observed in this image of southern Turkey. The three largest are, from top to bottom, the Keban Reservoir, the Karakaya Reservoir and Lake Atatürk Dam.

The surrounding terrain, in Elâzığ Province (Old Name Elezîz), appears mostly mountainous. The source of the Euphrates river is located in this province. The total area of the province is 9,153 square kilometres (3,534 sq mi), 826 km2 (319 sq mi) of which is covered by reservoirs and natural lakes.
