Caspian Sea - May 23rd, 2011

The image focuses on Karabogas Bay (or Kara Bogas Gol), a bay of the Caspian Sea. The greenish-blue bay is in a shallow inundated depression in the northwestern corner of Turkmenistan, and has a surface area of about 14,000 km².

The bay is located in Turkmenistan’s Balkan Province, in the far west of the country. An arid area of sandy desert can be seen stretching across the province, south of Karabogas Bay. Due to the very low water supply, agriculture is negligible, and only 4.5% of Turkmenistan’s arable lands are within the province.
