Hanoi is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam, with an estimated population of 6.232.940 (2008) and a total area of 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions.
The city is located on the right bank of the Red River, which passes by on its way to the Gulf of Tonkin. The black area amidst the bright white of the bustling city, not far from the riverbank, is West Lake (Hồ Tây in Vietnamese), with a perimeter of 17 km (about 10.6 miles).
It is deemed to be an oxbow lake, created from a curved part of the Red River after it had changed its course many centuries ago.
