Dek Island in Lake Tana, Ethiopia11.9N 37.2E
Partially visible on the right side of this image is Lake Tana, located in the highlands of Ethiopia. The lake is the largest in the country and the source of the Blue Nile River. Here, its waters appear tan and green due to sediments and algal growth.
Visible amidst these colored waters is Dek Island. At approximately 16 square kilometers in size, it is the biggest island in Lake Tana. Administratively included in the Achefer woreda of the Mirab Gojjam Zone, the island has a total population of approximately 17,000 people.
