The fertile green areas amidst the dry Sahara sands are situated along the banks of the Nile River and its delta in Egypt. Upon opening the full image, the channels of the river can be seen cutting through the green valley. Lake Moeris, silver in color due to sun glint, is also visible on the northern side of the heart-shaped Faiyum Oasis, just west of the Nile.

Small cities and towns appear as light brown dots scattered throughout the green, while the large city of Cairo is visible as a brownish grey area at the base of the delta. Although the Cairo metropolis extends away from the Nile in all directions, the city of Cairo resides only on the east bank of the river and two islands within it on a total area of 214 square kilometers (83 sq mi).
