The Bratsk Reservoir, the large, curved lake along the snow- and ice-covered Angara River in the center of the image, is located in Irkutsk Oblast and Ust-Orda Buryat Autonomous Okrug, Russia. The westernmost tip of Lake Baikail is also visible in the bottom right corner.

The reservoir is named after the city of Bratsk, the largest city adjacent to its shores. It has a surface area of 5470 km2 and a maximum volume of 169.27 billion cubic metres (5,977.71 billion cubic feet).

This earth fill dam of the Bratsk hydroelectric plant was completed in 1967. It is 125 m high, 4417 m long, and a highway runs along the top of the dam wall. At the time of its inauguration, the reservoir was the largest artificial lake in the world. Its electrical power capacity is 4,500 MW.
