The city of Bern is visible as a white area near the center of this orthorectified image. Several lakes can also be observed here, the largest of which is Lake Neuchâtel (upper left quadrant). Bern lies on the Swiss plateau in the Canton of Bern, slightly west of the center of Switzerland and 20 km (12 mi) north of the Bernese Alps.

The countryside around Bern was formed by glaciers during the most recent Ice Age. The two mountains closest to Bern are the Gurten with a height of 958 m (3,143.04 ft) and the Bantiger with a height of 947 m (3,106.96 ft).
