Niger and Chad - November 9th, 2010

The grouping of almost circular brown patches in the upper left quadrant are the peaks and plateaus of the Aïr Mountains. They are located in northern Niger, rising up above the Sahara desert. The light tan, sandy part to their east is a part of the Sahara called the Ténéré Desert.

Moving southeast from the mountains, one comes to a body of water surrounded by green wetlands at the edge of the Sahara Desert. The body of water is Lake Chad, important for providing water to more than 20 million people living in the four countries that surround it (Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria).
