Tan, brown and green fields create checkered patterns across the Russian lands north of the Black Sea and the border with Georgia. Temperatures in the region through the year can range from -30°C in winter to 40°C in summer.

Several rivers criss-cross the landscape as well, including the West Manych River, which has its source in Lake Manych-Gudilo (above the center), a large saltwater reservoir lake. The lake has an area of about 344 km² but an average depth of only about 0.6 m.

The West Manych River flows north-west from the lake, through a number of reservoirs, eventually falling into the lower Don River.
