Vegetation Index of Coastal Australia Between Van Diemen and Joseph Bonaparte Gulfs

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of part of Australia’s Northern Territory, near the border with Western Australia. The index is good (green) near the coast, particularly between Van Diemen Gulf (top center) and Joseph Bonaparte Gulf (left center).

The index is also good on Melville Island, by Van Diemen Gulf, and on the Cobourg Peninsula, east of the island, Arnhem Land, as well as around Lake Argyle (south of Joseph Bonaparte Gulf). As one moves further inland and away from these bodies of water, the index of photosynthetic activity becomes progressively lower (yellow).

Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina - December 29th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of northeastern Argentina (top left), southern Brazil (above) and Uruguay (below). Visible near the coast are two lagoons: Lagoa dos Patos (above) and Lagoa Mirim (below, called Laguna Merín in Spanish). The Rio de la Plata Estuary can also be observed at the bottom left of the full image.

The vegetation index is highest (rusty red) to the northwest, in Argentina’s Misiones Province. The rest of the land shows a generally good index of photosynthetic activity (green), with some areas of high activity interspersed throughout.

Vegetation Index in Ghana Near Lake Volta Ranges from Good to High

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index near Lake Volta, in Ghana, near the border with Togo (right). Photosynthetic activity is generally good (green) throughout the image.

The index is highest (rusty red) to the southwest of the lake, in southwestern Ghana, and near the lake’s eastern shoreline. The index becomes lower (yellow) as one moves northward to the top of the image.

Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria - October 24th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria (left to right along the coast). Visible to the left is Lake Volta, in Ghana, and visible at the upper right is Lake Kainji, on the Niger River, in Nigeria.

The vegetation index is generally good (green) throughout the image. However, there are some areas of high photosynthetic activity (rusty red), particuarly in the vicinity of Lake Volta.

Tanzania - August 1st, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of Tanzania (right), northeastern Zambia (below), Democratic Republic of the Congo (left) and Rwanda and Burundi (between Tanzania and the DRC). Several lakes appear as black areas, the largest of which are Lake Victoria (above) and Lake Tanganyika (center).

Most of the large plateau of central Tanzania shows a low vegetation index (light yellow), while the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi show a generally good index (green), and Zambia has a mixed index, ranging from good to low.
