Southern Italy, from Gargano Promontory to Calabria – April 22nd, 2012

April 22nd, 2012 Category: Image of the day, Mountains

Italy - January 4th, 2012

This wide-swath ASAR image focuses on southern Italy. Mountains can be observed along the western coast, particularly in Calabria, while the eastern coast appears significantly flatter, with the exception of the terrain of the Gargano Promontory (near the left edge in the upper left quadrant). Many cities and towns appear as white circular areas parallel to the east coast. Visible in the upper part of the full image is the more mountains coastal terrain of the Balkans.

This is a great picture showing the different landscapes of Calabria. Only 9% is flat land and the rest is mainly hills and mountains reaching up to almost 2,000 metres above sea level. Thanks
