Chile is located in southwestern South America. It has an area of 291,930 sq mi (756,096 sq km) and a population (2009 est.) of approximately 16,602,000. The capital is Santiago, visible at the foot of the Andes Mountains in the lower half of the image.

The very shape of Chile is distinctive, a multi-colored ribbon of land 4,300 kilometers (2,700 mi) long and on average 175 kilometers (109 mi) wide. Its climate varies, ranging from the world’s driest desert-the Atacama-in the north, through a Mediterranean climate in the center, to a rainy temperate climate in the south.
