Japan - July 27th, 2009

The city of Osaka, on Honshu Island, Japan, is located at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay. The bright white area below the river is Osaka City proper, while the other light grey areas include over ten smaller cities.

Several ships can be seen in the bay. Also of note is the Kansai International Airport, located on an artificial island in the bay.

Moving from the bay into the Yodo River, several bridges can also be noted on the lower reaches. By following the Yodo northeast, the southern tip of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, can be seen in the upper right quadrant.

The hills and mountains towards the top of this orthorectified image are part of the Tamba Highlands.
