Several lakes can be observed in this image of Turkey, Iran and Iraq. In the upper right hand corner is a small section of the Caspian Sea. The southwestern part of the shoreline is framed by the green slopes of the Alborz Mountains in Iran.

The reddish brown lake to the west is Lake Urmia, a salt lake in northwestern Iran, near Turkey. It is the largest lake in the Middle East, and the third largest salt water lake on earth. Here, its shores are ringed by whitish salt flats.

Further west, in the upper lefthand corner, is Lake Van in Turkey. South of Lake Van is Lake Tharthar in Iraq, between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers.
