Several lakes can be situated situated between the Tigris (right) and Euphrates (left) Rivers in Iraq. The largest is Lake Tharthar, situated 120 kilometers north of Baghdad. After flowing around the lake the two rivers converge to form the Shatt al’Arab River.

A smaller lake can be observed west of Lake Tharthar, the man-made reservoir called Lake Qadisiyah. It sits on the north side of the Haditha Dam on the Euphrates River. The reservoir has 100 kilometres of shoreline and provides irrigation water for nearby cultivated fields.
