Mali - December 26th, 2010

The Niger River runs across the upper part of this image. The large green area to which it is connected is the Niger Inland Delta (also known as the Inner Niger and Macina Inland Delta), a green area of wetlands in central Mali.

The delta is situated on the middle course of the Niger River, the longest in West Africa. It fills during the wet season, usually between July and September, turning from a swamp into a lake. In this December image, the delta is drying out and turning into a network of lakes and channels.
