Nepal and India - January 9th, 2012

The white area surrounded by the Himalayas in the center of the top part of this orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image is the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft), in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley in central Nepal, surrounded by four major hills: Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri.

Visible south of Kathmandu is the city of Paṭnā, the capital of the Indian state of Bihar and the second largest city in Eastern India (in terms of population). It is situated on the southern bank of the Ganges. The city also straddles the rivers Sone, Gandak and Punpun Rivers, all visible on the left side of the image. The city is approximately 35 km long and 16 km to 18 km wide.
