Saudi Arabia - November 17th, 2011

The Red Sea runs down the center of this orthorectified wide-swath ASAR image, separating Saudi Arabia (right) from Egypt (top left) and Sudan (bottom left).

Visible as a bright white area on the right side of the image is Jeddah, a city located on the coast of the Red Sea in western Saudi Arabia. It is the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest sea port on the Red Sea, and the second largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. The population of the city currently stands at 3.2 million.

Most of western Saudi Arabia is mountainous, except on the coastal plain bordering the Red Sea, which includes the Jeddah area, although Jeddah is bordered to the east by the Al-Sarawat Mountains. The Sharm of Salman (also called the Gulf of Salman) borders the city from north.
