Greenish Lake Urmia Ringed by White Salt Flats, Iran – October 29th, 201037.6N 45.4E
Lake Urmia, in northwestern Iran near the border with Turkey, is a large salt lake. Due to use of the lake’s waters for agricultural purposes, the water levels have dropped, showing white salt flats around the edges.
Here, the lake’s waters themselves appear green, although at other times they have appeared red in color (click here for an example). The southern end appears shallower and white in color. A cluster of islands can be seen in this section of the lake.
Upon opening the full image, a causeway can be seen cutting across the lake at its narrowest part. Also visible in the full image is Lake Van, in Turkey, to the west.
