Es Safa Lava Field, Syria – November 8th, 2008
Here we can observe the Es Safa volcanic field in the South of Syria, southeast of the capital city of Damascus.
According to the Global Volcanism Program, the area consists of a lava field containing Holocene volcanic vents, and a basaltic field also containing many vents. Reportedly, a boiling lava lake was also present in the mid 19th century.
Es Safa is within the northern part of the extensive alkaline Harrat Ash Shaam volcanic field, reaching from southern Syria through northeastern Jordan all the way to Saudi Arabia and east to the Euphrates River in Iraq.
