The muddy brown waters of the Congo River flow across this image of the lush rainforest of the Democratic Republic of  the Congo. The river (also known as the Zaire River) has an overall length of 4,700 km (2,920 mi).

At the top center, it passes by the town of Kindu, visible as a tan area on the banks of the river, the capital of Maniema province. It has a population of about 200,000 and is situated at an altitude of about 500 metres.
