Colorful Basins of the Aral Sea, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan – July 2nd, 201146.7N 61.6E
The three main basins of the shrinking Aral Sea can be observed in this image of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Here, the southeastern basin appears bright green, while the southwestern and northern basins appear blue and turquoise in color.
Work is being done to restore in part the North Aral Sea. Irrigation works on the Syr Darya have been repaired and improved to increase its water flow. Also, since the completion of Dike Kokaral in August 2005, the water level of the North Aral has risen, and its salinity has decreased.
