Caspian Sea and surroundings - February 25th, 2009

A cloud vortex, left, swirls in the air above the Caspian Sea. Although much of the sea is obscured by clouds, a part of the southeastern shoreline in Turkmenistan is clear. Here, a bright greenish-blue algal bloom flourishes.

Sarygamysh Lake, on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, is also visible in the upper right quadrant.

The image thumbnail has no snow, with the exception of the mountains to the South. However, upon opening the full image, the Aral Sea can be seen, partially surrounded by snow.

The northern part of the Caspian Sea also comes into view, covered by snow and ice. ThisĀ  northern part typically freezes during winter, although the entire lake may sometimes freeze in particularly cold weather.
