Circular Crops in Libyan Desert – December 9th, 2008
Green and brown circular fields seem to appear out of nowhere amongst the reddish sands of the Sahara Desert in Libya.
Desert-based irrigation projects such as this one typically drill thousands of feet underground to tap fossil water deposits. The fields are sometimes over one kilometer in diameter. There are a half-dozen or so such projects in Libya.
A few clusters of crops are visible here; many more can be seen to the northeast upon opening the full image.
