Chain of Great Barrier Reef off Queensland Coast, Australia – January 28th, 2009
Here, a long section of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, from the northern tip of the Cape York Peninsula to near the coastal city of Cairns, can be seen.
The first close-up shows the reef in Princess Charlotte Bay. A light phytoplankton bloom is present along the southern shore of the bay.
The second detail shows the reef along the coast from the Starck River to just north of Cairns. In addition to the chain of coral framing the shoreline, several river mouths can be seen to the north, spilling green sediments or algae into the Coral Sea.
