Russia – August 5th, 2012

The incredible bright teal and turquoise hues visible through the clouds in this image belong to a phytoplankton bloom flourishing in the Barents Sea, off the coast of Russia. Different types of phytoplankton reflect light of different colors, therefore a multicolored bloom such as the one visible here usually contains various different species of the tiny microorganisms. Coloration is also affected by the depth of the bloom Рwhen the tiny organisms are located deeper in the water, less light is reflected and the color may appear duller.
