Aral Sea - May 2nd, 2011

The Aral Sea, located in Uzbekistan and Kazakstan, once one of the largest lakes in the world, has shrunk considerably and separated into three basins.

The northern basin appears bright green, while the two southern basins are lighter shades. The southeastern basin seems to have the least water, although most of the southern area in general is covered in white salt flats where deep water used to be.
