Badain Jaran Desert and Qinghai Lake, China – July 20th, 201140.3N 102.7E
Occupying the center of this image is the Badain Jaran Desert, in China, near the border with Mongolia (above). It spans the provinces of Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, and covers an area of 49,000 sq. kilometers (19,000 sq. miles).
Visible to the south of the desert is Qinghai Lake, a saline lake situated in the province of Qinghai, and the largest lake in China. It is located about 100 km west of the provincial capital of Xining at 3,205 m (10,515 feet) above sea level in a depression of the Tibetan Plateau.
