Badain Jaran Desert and Etsin Col River, China – September 18th, 200940.0N 102.2E
The Badain Jaran Desert covers 49,000 sq. kilometers (30, 000 sq. miles) of China’s Gansu and Ningxia Provinces as well as Inner Mongolia.
One extraordinary feature of the desert is its tall, stationary sand dunes, some of which reach heights of 500 meters (1,600 ft).
The close-up focuses on an area of dunes in the northwestern edge of the desert. Further west, a flatter area with no dunes is crosses vertically by the Etsin Col River.
