Australia - April 1st, 2012

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of the Cape York Peninsula, in the far north of Queensland, Australia (below) and the island of New Guinea (above). About half of the land of the Cape York Peninsula is flat and used for grazing livestock, however there are also relatively undisturbed eucalyptus wooded savannahs and tropical rainforests. Here, most of the peninsula shows a good (green) vegetation index. Papua, Indonesia (upper left) shows the highest vegetation index (rusty red), while Papua New Guinea (upper right) is slightly lower although higher than the Cape York Peninsula to the south.

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of the Yucatán Peninsula. The peninsula comprises the Mexican states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo; the northern part of the nation of Belize; and Guatemala’s northern El Petén Department.

Photosynthetic activity is generally mixed between good (green) and high (rusty red) across the peninsula, with some areas of concentrated higher activity to the south and some areas of low activity (yellow) along the northern coast.

Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina - December 29th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of northeastern Argentina (top left), southern Brazil (above) and Uruguay (below). Visible near the coast are two lagoons: Lagoa dos Patos (above) and Lagoa Mirim (below, called Laguna Merín in Spanish). The Rio de la Plata Estuary can also be observed at the bottom left of the full image.

The vegetation index is highest (rusty red) to the northwest, in Argentina’s Misiones Province. The rest of the land shows a generally good index of photosynthetic activity (green), with some areas of high activity interspersed throughout.

Southeast Asia - December 12th, 2011

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation of Southeast Asia, including parts of China and China’s Hainan Island, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Photosynthetic activity is generally good (green) throughout the image.

The vegetation index is highest (rusty red) at the base of the Malay Peninsula at in the lower left corner and in the mountainous region in the upper left quadrant. It is lowest (yellow) in central and eastern Thailand.

This FAPAR image shows the vegetation index of France (right), as well as parts of the United Kingdom (top center), Ireland (top left) and Spain (below).

The index is generally good (green) throughout, with some areas of high photosynthetic activity (rusty red) in Wales and southwestern England, and the Manche department of Normandy in northern France. The index is lowest (yellow) in southern France and across the Pyrenees, in Spain.
