Fires in Oregon, USA - May 21st, 2009

The wildfire season in the western U.S. is strongly seasonal with 94% of the fires taking place between the months of May and October.

Here, two fires can be seen in southwestern Oregon, in or near the Siuslaw National Forest. The smoke from the fires is blowing to the southwest.

The tan patches along the coast are sand dunes in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, stretching approximately 64 km (40 mi) north from the Coos River to the Siuslaw River.

These are the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. Some dunesĀ  tower upwards of 152 meters (500 feet) above sea level.
