Russia – July 18th, 2012

Smoke from wildfires in Russia hangs in the air near the north of the border with Kazakhstan, and near Novosibirsk. Russian authorities have announced that the hundreds of fires burning across the country were caused by a variety of reasons, including lightning strikes and people losing control of agricultural fires and campfires. Greenpeace has reported that more land in Russia has burned so far this year than in 2010, a year in which intense wildfires affected western Russia.
