July 27th, 2011 Category: Deserts, Dust Storms, Fires, Lakes

China - July 22nd, 2011

Smoke hovers in the air over eastern China, obscuring the ground below. To the west of the cloud of smoke, however, the Badain Jaran Desert can be seen left of the center of the image. The desert covers an area of 49,000 sq. kilometers (19,000 sq. miles).

Visible to the southwest of the desert is Qinghai Lake, a saline body of water in a depression of the Tibetan Plateau in the province of Qinghai. Upon opening the full image, some dust can be seen at the far left edge, blowing over the Qaidam Basin to the northwest of the lake.
