Smoke over Azerbaijan and Caspian Sea
Smoke hangs in the skies over Azerbaijan and the southern Caspian Sea. The Alborz mountain range forms a barrier between the south Caspian and the Qazvin-Tehran plateau, preventing the smoke from spilling into neighboring Iran.
Two lakes are visible in the smoke-free part of the image: Lake Urmia, in northwestern Iran near the border with Turkey, and Lake Van, in Turkey, to the west. The former is greenish brown in color and ringed with white salt flats, while the latter is dark blue.
