China and Myanmar - December 19th, 2010

The mountainous area in the center of this image marks the border between Myanmar (lower left) and China (above and right). Smoke can be seen filling a valley on the right side of the image, by the border of China’s Yunnan province.

The province is located in the far southwest of the country and situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast.

In the west, the relative height from mountain peaks to river valleys can be as much as 3,000 m. This explains the containment of the smoke in the valley – it is unable to spread beyond the high surrounding mountains.
