Smoke From Western USA Fires Fills Valleys45.4N 112.7W
Smoke from fires in western USA enters the crevices of valleys and rivers between mountain ridges. The western fire season continues, with over 7 million acres by the end of August. While the number of fires is down from the 10-year average of 54,209, the acreage affected is well above the average of 5.4 million acres. The fires have been quite large, particularly in Idaho and Montana, and the cost to fight them continues to rise (click here for previous images).
