Smoke Cloud West of Araguaia River, Brazil11.4S 53.3W
Much of western South America remains veiled by a thick cloud of smoke from fires burning in Bolivia and Brazil. Here, the smoke is thickest on the left side of the image, over the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.
Upon opening the full image, however, multiple individual plumes of smoke can be observed clustered around the Araguaia River. The river provides the border between Mato Grosso (west) and Tocantins (east), and appears here as a yellowish line running vertically down the right side of the image. Also visible in the full image is the mouth of the Amazon River, at the top.
