Mozambique Fires – September 3rd, 2008
This image from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on ESA’s Envisat satellite on September 3rd, 2008, shows scores of fires in central Mozambique, on the southeastern coast of Africa.
Most of the upper left quadrant of the scene shows southern Malawi, including the southern tip of Lake Nyasa. These fires are likely part of the seasonal burning that accompanies local agriculture.
Though such fires are not necessarily immediately hazardous, they can have a negative impact on human health and natural resources.
