Many Australian Wildfires Under Control
Many of the fires in Australia have been contained, though firefighters are still struggling to control about a dozen others.
The state of Victoria and parts of New South Wales and South Australia can be seen to the left. Smoke trails from two fires near Melbourne are visible in the lower left quadrant. However, much of the smoke that was previously veiling southeastern Australia has cleared (please click here for earlier article).
As of today, according to reports by the Associated Press, the disaster’s official death toll is 181. However, the efforts to find and identity victims continues, and officials expect the death toll to exceed 200.
Over 3900 square kilometers (1500 square miles) of forests and farms have been burned. Officials have raised the tally of destroyed homes to 1,831, and the number of people left homeless or who fled their homes and have not returned has been increased to 7,000.
