Hundreds of Fires and Huge Arch of Smoke Across Russia – July 20th, 201258.7N 89.1E
Hundreds of wildfires continued to burn across central Russia, burning through thousands of hectares of boreal forest and creating huge, thick clouds of smoke over the country. Last week, it was reported that over 25,000 hectares (97 square miles) of forest were burning. Here, many individual fires can be seen in the lower right quadrant, their plumes of smoke radiating towards the south, southwest and west. Other individual blazes can be observed in the upper left quadrant, their plumes of smoke trailing off towards the northeast. A thick swath of smoke also sweeps across the image in an arch.
