Ghana - December 27th, 2010

This image focuses on Lake Volta, in Ghana. It is the largest reservoir by surface area in the world, at about 8,502 kmĀ² (3,275 square miles). By water volume, it is also the fourth largest reservoir.

Here, the skies over the reservoir appear translucent due to smoke blowing across Ghana from fires burning elsewhere on the African continent.

How much fire does it take to create such a haze? How much greenhouse gas is that? Ouch!
