Indian farmers often set fire to fields to clear them for planting, in order to clear out some pests that eat crops and turn crop residues from the previous season into fertilizing ash. Hundreds of agricultural fires have been burning in northern India over the last month. Here, the smoke blows eastwards into Bangladesh. Although the smoke appeared to originate primarily from the agricultural fires, other factors such as urban and industrial smog may have contributed.
