Smoke from wildfires is visible in the upper part of this image, near the White Nile River in Sudan. Parts of the river actually do appear white, due to sun glint.

Fires are common in Sudan during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April or May. The fire hazard becomes higher as the dry season progresses, due to an increase in dryness of grasses which create high fuel loads for the fires.
