Fires Near Lake Mackay, Australia

22.5S 128.6E

January 11th, 2013 Category: Fires, Lakes

Australia – January 10th, 2013

Fires can be seen south of Lake Mackay in this image of the border area of Western Australia and the southern part of the Northern Territory. Another fire can be seen to the east in the full image.

The lake (top left) is the largest of hundreds of ephemeral salt lakes scattered throughout the two regions. This image documents the appearance of the dry parts of Western Australia’s Great Sandy Desert, Gibson Desert and Tanami Desert.

The Northern Territory has had a sweltering start to 2013, with many places setting new temperature records. The high temperatures and dryness of the region create prime conditions for fires.
