Wind blows smoke from fires near Lake Baikal, in southern Russia, towards the northeast.
The fire hazard season in this region begins in April. Many large fires are accidentally started by people burning dry grass and brush near evergreen forests.
The close-ups focus on two clusters of fires in the steppes (grassland) and taiga (evergreen forest) in the Baikal region, one cluster to the southeast and one to the south of Lake Baikal.
