Fires in Pantanal by Brazil-Paraguay-Bolivia Border

19.4S 58.4W

September 20th, 2012 Category: Fires

Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia – September 5th, 2012

Several fires can be seen near the border area of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia (clockwise from upper right), in the region known as the Pantanal. The fires may have been set purposefully to clear land; deforestation is a problem in elevated areas of the Pantanal which contain forest. This in turn causes a significant threat to the region in other ways because silt run-off from deforested highlands alters soil hydrology.
