Mato Grosso, literally meaning Thick Woods, is a Brazilian state located in the western part of the country. It is the third largest in area.

The third largest state in area, it has a flat landscape, alternating great chapadas and plain areas. The vegetation of the open pasture covers 40% of the state.

Amidst such pastural and agricultural land, a double plume of smoke from fires can be seen in the upper left quadrant, blowing towards the northwest.
